Arthrogram

This examination is used to evaluate joint structures including ligaments, cartilage and bones. It requires an injection and sometimes joint exercies.

Before the Test
The doctor or nurse will give you an injection with some numbing medication such as novacaine. X-rays are used so the precautions are the same as for x-rays. Please tell your doctor if your are allergic to x-rays.

During the Test
A needle will be inserted into the joint and dye given. You may be asked to exercise your joint before or in the middle of the x-rays.

After the Test
Your joint may feel swollen for one or two days but will gradually decrease. Follow the instructions you will be given for each specific joint. Your doctor or a radiologist will discuss the results with you.
